Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan

金匮肾气丸 jīn guì shèn qì wán also known as Jin Gui Shen Qi Pill, Kidney Qi Pill from the Golden Cabinet, Ba Wei Di Huang Wan

In skin practice, Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan is used where the picture is skin numbness.

The pattern is Kidney Yang deficiency, so the surface loses its warmth, the urine is pale and frequent and the lower back feels cold. Shu Di Huang, Shan Zhu Yu and Shan Yao nourish the Kidney, Ze Xie, Fu Ling and Mu Dan Pi drain and balance that richness, and Fu Zi with Gui Zhi warms the Yang and moves the stalled fluid. A slow warming formula for chronic cold depletion, not Yin deficiency with heat or acute swelling.

What Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan is for

This is the ancestor of the warming Kidney formulas. It warms the Yang that keeps the surface warm and the fluid moving, so skin that has gone cold, pale and puffy slowly recovers its colour, its tone and its feeling. The design warms the Yang while nourishing the Yin it depends on, which is why it can be taken slowly over months.

The skin is cold and pale, sometimes with a faint waxy or yellow-white cast, and it looks puffy where fluid has settled, most visibly around the eyes, the ankles and the backs of the hands. The surface feels chilled to the touch even in a warm room, patches go numb or prickly, and the tissue feels soft and doughy rather than firm. There is no redness and no heat. The pattern is Kidney Yang deficiency, so the surface has lost the warmth that drives circulation and fluid movement.

Shu Di Huang, Shan Zhu Yu and Shan Yao nourish the Kidney so the warming herbs have something to warm, and Ze Xie, Fu Ling and Mu Dan Pi drain and balance that richness so the fluid does not stagnate. Fu Zi and Gui Zhi warm the Yang and move the stalled fluid outward to the surface. The classical proportion matters: the nourishing base is larger than the warming pair, so the Yang is warmed without the Yin being scorched, and the skin improves gradually.

It is for chronic cold depletion, not for acute swelling or for skin that is red, hot and tight. It contains Fu Zi, so it requires professional supervision, and new or one-sided swelling needs medical assessment before any treatment. Dry, flushed, thin skin with night heat is Yin deficiency and belongs elsewhere. The change to look for is warmth returning to the surface and the puffiness settling, rather than a fast result.

Actions

  • Warms Kidney Yang
  • Supports the transformation of fluids
  • Strengthens the lower back and legs
  • Warms and nourishes the Kidney together

Properties

  • Taste and temperature: Predominantly sweet and pungent with a warm quality. Sweet nourishes the Kidney, pungent and warm activate the Yang.
  • Organs: Kidney, Spleen, Bladder
  • Channels: Kidney, Spleen, Bladder

The pattern behind it

The pattern is Kidney Yang deficiency. The Yang warms the body and drives fluid transformation, so its weakness produces coldness, frequent urine and puffiness. The classical design warms the Yang while nourishing the Yin it is based on, which is why it is used for the cold depleted pattern rather than for acute swelling.

Patterns it treats

Kidney Yang Deficiency

Cold, pale, puffy skin that feels chilled in a warm room and goes numb in patches, with a soft doughy texture and poor colour. The pattern is Kidney Yang deficiency, so the surface has lost the warmth that drives circulation and keeps fluid moving.

How the formula is built

Six nourishing and draining herbs plus two warming ones. The proportion is classical: the nourishing base is larger, so the Yang is warmed without the Yin being scorched. That is why the formula can be taken for months and why it became the ancestor of the warming Kidney family.

Origin and history

Jin Gui Yao Lue (金匮要略, Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber) by Zhang Zhongjing, Eastern Han dynasty, around 220 CE.

Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan is one of the oldest warming Kidney formulas in continuous use, recorded in the Golden Cabinet nearly two thousand years ago. Its principle of warming the Yang on a base of nourished Yin shaped the whole later family, from You Gui Wan to the modern patent medicines.

Classical record

Zhang Zhongjing recorded the pill in the Golden Cabinet for Kidney Yang deficiency with coldness, frequent urine and fluid accumulation, warming the Yang while nourishing the Yin.

Evidence note

No controlled trial of this treatment in skin conditions was identified for this entry. What is described here rests on the classical and later materia medica record and on traditional clinical use, not on controlled trial evidence, and it is not a prediction of benefit.
